I worked with a guy who had an amazing interview technique. Our office was on the second floor and when a candidate arrived he’d tell them to wait downstairs and they’d go for a coffee. He’d bounce out of the office, collect the candidate and march them down the street.
The coffee shop was on the other side of a reasonably busy road, with a crossing to get pedestrians safely across. He’d wait for a few seconds while the light was red, then march out into the still moving traffic and cross the road.
If the candidate didn’t follow and instead waited until the light was green, that was the end of the interview. My friend said he wanted to employ people who took risks. He wanted people to run across the traffic.
I’m not suggesting it’s the best interview technique, and it doesn’t appear in any interview guides, but if you’re a candidate you should remember that the interview starts as soon as you ring the doorbell.
