A man walks along a harbour wall and catches sight of a man fishing. Sitting next to him is a young boy. The fisherman is doing very well and has a big bucket brimming with fish. The man stops and asks the fisherman, “How many fish have you caught today?”
“I catch about 10 fish a day.”
“How long does that take?”
“About an hour. I’m a good fisherman.”
“If you’re that good why don’t you catch more?”
“Because I don’t need more.”
“But you could sell what you don’t need and make some money.”
“I just catch what I need for my wife, our sons and daughters and their families, so they have enough to eat every day. I sit here with my grandson and we fish together and share our stories.”
“But if you’re that good a fisherman, you could catch more, which would give you the money to buy a boat, so you could catch even more to sell at the fish market. Then you could buy a bigger boat, to catch more fish, and maybe a warehouse to prepare them for sale. You could make an absolute fortune.”
“And why would I want to do that?”
“Because someone would come along and buy your fish business and you could retire.”
“And what would I do in retirement?”
“You could sit on the harbour wall and catch fish for your dinner with your grandson.”
It's not all about money!
