Watering Down The Message

We found out that one of our customer segments was the older generation. They liked the convenience of having a cordless phone, so they could sit comfortably in a chair and talk to their family and friends, or move around the house whilst in conversation.

Our phone was big, with a large and well spaced keypad, and a large display. It also came with a charging cradle, with a convenient "find-me" button so if it was pushed down the side of the sofa it could cry for help. And it was quite rugged, so if it was dropped, it didn't matter. We found out from a customer that it did, however, melt when placed against an electric fire! Interetsing that she claimed under the warranty.

The only comment we occasionally got back from our older customers was they didn't like the colour and the phone felt very plastic.

I set to work thinking of what we could do, and came up with the brilliant idea of making a floral version of the phone. Oldies like flowers, right? Both the handset and cradle would be covered in a film depicting different types of plants and flowers, indoor and outdoor. To blend into the, no doubt, floral domestic scene. Sure enough our customers liked the new product and it continued to sell well. But we also started to get returns, particularly for moisture damage.

Turns out some of our customers were watering them.

Not such a brilliant plan after all!
